Smush WordPress plugin review, lower image quality after compression?

Here is all you need to know about Smush lower image quality after compression.

Smush is an excellent plugin for WordPress.

If you have a website with tons of images, it is quite important to install Smush as it will save up a lot of space if you don’t have infinite space from your hosting provider.

Also, it helps with SEO as well, as search engines view images with a smaller size as a better user experience.

In terms of saving disk space, after using Smush on a Woocommerce website that has around 3-4.000 images, it saved up around 1.5GB of disk space out of 3GB, after running the bulk smash tool.

This was quite impressive.

Smush lower image quality after compression?

Regarding the image quality.

I’m just going to attach some examples, two images, before and after using Smush.

As you can see the disk size has been slightly reduced.

The image quality is pretty much the same, probably it was decreased with 10%.

It is really barely noticeable.

Original image 260kb.

Image that was compressed by Smush 240kb.

If the person that is uploading images on the WordPress website is using high resolution pictures, it is a good idea to enable from Smush “image resizing” and set it to the default full hd resolution, which is 1920 with 1080.

You can even lower these values if you want to save up much more space.

This way, if you run the bulk smush button, Smush will just resize the images.

Last tip, if you really want to save up some more space for WordPress, you can set from “settings” > “Media”, “0” to all image sizes.

Leave “Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional)” enabled.

This will stop WordPress from creating additional images that 90% of the time will not even be used by your WordPress theme or in any other circumstances.

Those images will just remain there to fill up the disk space, and after a while this might be a serious issue as you might have to upgrade your hosting plan.
