Recover, repair broken images from a website?

How exactly to recover, repair broken images like jpg or png from a website, after you download them by FTP?

In some cases, some image files don’t have an extension like .jpg or .gif.
When opening them, they look broken or fine.

If they are broken on your local hard disk but they look fine on a website / server, download them by using Filezilla (FTP client), from “settings”, go to “file types” and select “binary” and uncheck the two options from the bottom.

Download the images on your PC.

They should look like files with no extension.

Open a file with Windows Photo Viewer (the default Windows pictures client).

If the image is not broken, all you need to do is to add “.jpg” at its end.

If you have more than an image, you can use this software called “Bulk Rename Utility“.

The software can mass rename your files, more exactly, it can add a “.jpg” extension to all of your files.

Once you have the software, open it, check for the “11” option named “extension”, select “fixed” and write “jpg”.

Click ok and wait for the application to rename your images.

Re-upload the images on the server, they should not look broken anymore.

Overall, the issue with broken images from a website happens on various servers on upload or download.
The images look ok on the server, website, but once you download them, they do not appear correctly on your computer.

Other things to consider

One thing to consider, Photoshop cannot help you with this issue.

WordPress should never have this issue, most of the websites with broken images after download by FTP are customs websites built in php.
If they are not properly coded, images might break. It is a good practice to upload images inside folders as some servers have a limit of 10.000 files in a folder.
If you go over that limit, the images might break.
