Prostatitis from cycling?

Prostatitis from cycling?

Prostatitis can happen from cycling, there is no doubt about it.

What are the symptoms?

Difficulty when urinating, frequent urination, some groin pressure sensation.

Prostatitis can be a serious issue as it will not allow you to sleep properly since you will need to urinate, it will not allow you to go to places as you will need to urinate too often.
Not sleeping properly will affect your immunity system and a poor immunity system can cause health issues.

Cases when prostatitis can appear from cycling?

– If your saddle is not adjusted properly. If the saddle is tilted up on the front side.

– If you use a saddle that is not comfortable for you, a saddle that does not have an empty area in the middle, a saddle that is too narrow for you.

– If you ride your bicycle on long distances, without getting off from it, or standing up.

– If the bicycle frame size is too big for you, you will have to tilt forward, causing more pressure on your groin area.

These can be causes that will generate prostatitis from cycling.

Will prostatitis from cycling can get cured by itself?

The answer is yes.

If you stay away from your bicycle for a few weeks, even months if it’s serious, the symptoms will get better.
You will be able to urinate normally, you will not experience the pressure and discomfort around the groin area.

But if you keep riding your bicycle in the same condition, it can get even worse.

An idea could be to ride your bicycle only standing up, so it will be no contact between you and the saddle.
But in that case you will need a serious bicycle that is in perfect mechanical condition.

Plus that you will need quite some training to be able to ride the bicycle only standing up.

You can replace the saddle.

What saddle to use?

If you experience prostatitis from cycling, you should get a saddle that is very wide.
Even though it might look silly, it’s better to avoid all the health issues and get a saddle that will keep you comfortable.

I would recommend Wittkop Air System, Velo Plush.

Also a wide saddle like this one should work:
San Marco Bioaktive Trekking saddle.

Saddles that didn’t worked for me:

Selle SMP TRK (which is very expensive).

This Specialized Hardrock saddle.

And many other saddles, but none have worked except the ones that are very wide and comfortable.
The idea is is that if you experience prostatitis from cycling, you should stay away from narrow saddles.

The best thing to do is to go to a bike shop and explain them your problem, ask them to give you a very big and wide saddle.
I’m pretty sure that they will be happy to help you.

A wide saddle with a very big padding will allow you to ride the bicycle standing down, without putting pressure between your legs.

This way, even if you ride the bike for longer distances, you will be fine.

A good idea is that from time to time to stand up on the pedals to allow the blood to flow.

Lastly, stay away from saddle that are narrow, MTB saddles, even though they will allow you to ride your bicycle faster, it will cause prostatitis.
If you can afford it, it is always good to consult a doctor.
