Windows doesn’t start after uninstalling Avast?

A serious issue that can happen to your computer, Windows doesn’t start after uninstalling Avast.

If for any reason you want to uninstall Avast, if you simply uninstall it from “Control Panel”, after you restart the computer, you will get a blue screen and the computer will restart.

This happens because Avast is getting integrated in Windows quite well, not as a simple program.

At least there should be a warning to not uninstall Avast. Overall, it might seem absurd that uninstalling an antivirus can damage your operating system, but it happens in this case.

What to do if Windows doesn’t start after uninstalling Avast?

You will still be able to enter in Windows safe mode.
When you restart your computer, usually when you press “F1” or “F2”, you will enter in safe mode.

You can download on another computer or laptop, the “Avast uninstall utility”, “avastclear.exe” Link.

Transfer this utility tool on your computer, by a USB stick or an external hard drive.

Copy the tool on your computer.
Right click on it, “run as administrator”, proceed to do all the steps.

After you finish, restart the computer.

If you are lucky, Windows will work fine after that.

In my case, running the “Avast uninstall utility” didn’t solved the issue and Windows continued to display the blue screen and restart on boot.

How I’ve solved the issue?

In my case, I have Windows 7.

I went to “Control Panel”, to “Backup and restore” and managed to restore Windows as it was 2 days ago.
It all took about 10 minutes.

Luckily, I had that restore point from two days ago, before I’ve uninstalled Avast.

After running the restoration process, Windows started fine, Avast was installed.

After another attempt to uninstall Avast using the “Avast uninstall utility” from Safe Mode, Windows started again to display the blue screen on boot, so I had to run the Windows restoration process again.

Final solution could be to reinstall Windows, even though it takes time to reinstall all the programs you had before, this way you will be able to get rid of Avast and install another antivirus program.

Finally, Avast is not a bad antivirus, I’ve used it for years with no issue, but they should warn the user and even not allow him to try to uninstall the program from “Control Panel”.
