Chain rubbing front derailleur cage high gear, MTB, road bike?

A really annoying issue with the bicycle that can ruin the fun is the chain rubbing the front derailleur cage, on high gear.

That can happen if you slightly move as times goes, the gear knob from the handlebar shifter as you ride, it can happen when you lean the bike on something or when you grab it to carry it.

Here are some quick tips on how to adjust the front derailleur in order to fix the rubbing issue:

1. Switch to the largest cog and smallest front ring.

2. Turn clockwise the shifter knob from the handlebar until you feel that the cable is loose.

3. Turn the low limit screw clockwise, to tighten it until you feel that the chain rubs on the inner part of the front derailleur.

This is a good position.

4. Switch to the third cog, as you probably will never use the largest cogs anyway.

5. Turn anticlockwise the handlebar shifter knob and feel the cable as it gets tension. Pinch it with your finger to feel if it has enough tension.

6. Switch to the middle ring.

7. If there is enough tension in the cable, it should change to the middle ring right away with no issues.

8. If it doesn’t switch fast, tightem the cable even more by turning the knob anticlockwise (from the handlebar)

Keep switching gears, at this point you should be good, there should be no rubbing on the cage from any gear.
If there is, gently turn the low limit screw a bit to get more space in order to avoid the cage rubbing.

Regarding the high limit screw, that you can pretty much ignore as it doesn’t play a big role.
Usually it is already adjusted so the chain doesn’t go over the largest cog. That is it’s main role.
Adjusting it will not play any part in the chain rubbing the front derailleur cage, on high gear.

Final thing, after a few minutes or resting, start again by trying to shift on all your gears.
There should be no rubbing at this point.
