There is a quick fix for this issue.
Notice that when you save a file, .doc or .odt, there is a option below saying “Automatic file name extension”.
This option should be always enabled.
If it is not enabled, your files will have no extension (.doc or .odt).
You can still open them but you will have to go trough “open with” and from there to select Open Office Writer.
